Significance of Kali Pujo – A Different Diwali

Goddess Kali is worshipped in many forms at different times of the year across India. On the first new moon after Durga Puja, Shyama Kali is worshipped all over Bengal, the neighboring country Bangladesh, some parts of Bihar, Odissa, Assam, and Tripura. This coincides with Diwali which is celebrated in the rest of India and Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped during it. The day before the Kali Puja is marked as Bhoot Chaturdashi when it is believed that negative energy and evil spirits are at the peak of their energy. To ward off the evil, people light exactly 14 diyas or lamps in the house including the darkest and furthest corners, and eat 14 different types of leafy vegetables. The next night during the new moon, Kali Puja is performed.

How to get around during Kali Puja in Bangalore

There aren’t many Kali Puja or Kali Bari in Bangalore. And, Kali Puja pandals are sparsely located across the city. So, there is no easy way to cover them, even the major ones, by taking public transport. Haggling with autorickshaws for fare and route is extremely painful in Bengaluru. The best way to explore them is to travel by your own vehicle. Parking might be difficult near puja pandals. You just have to park a few blocks away. Another alternative is to book an Ola or Uber rental if you are planning to visit multiple pandals in a day. Individual rides will take an obnoxious amount of waiting time and fare.

The oldest Kali Bari in Bangalore has been conducting Kali Pujo since 1973 in a barren land. Later, the current temple was built in the same place. You can have their bhog prasad during the puja. The lane in front of the temple is very narrow. So, park a little further.

Durga Puja and Navratri: Different Traditions, Shared Devotion

Goddess Durga is worshipped in different forms and traditions in different parts of India.

Durga Puja coincides with Navratri, but the two have evolved through different regional customs. In many parts of India, Navratri is observed through fasting, vegetarian food, garba, dandiya, and the worship of different forms of the Goddess Durga over nine nights. Dussehra, the 10th day, celebrates Sri Ram defeating Ravan, the triumph of good over evil.

Though I couldn’t get a chance to visit, I heard it was good.

20. EKTARA SOCIO-CULTURAL ORGANISATION – Durga Puja in Bangalore in 2026

Ektara Socio-Cultural Organisation has been organizing Kengeri Sarbojonin Durgotsav and Navratri. Their main attraction is the themed pandal. This puja is one of our personal favourites.

In 2024, we stumbled upon this hidden gem. The only high-concept theme puja in Bengaluru!!! The theme was “Durga – The Rising”. It showcased the plights of women of different ages, communities, and places, and how they try to fight back and demand justice. The idols were made in a tribal setup. The contrast that 2 young boys (representing Kartik and Ganesh) playing happily and 2 young girls (representing Lakshmi and Saraswati) being disturbed by a man while playing shows the sad reality of today’s world. Maa Durga was seen protecting her children. Sadly, there were just 10 more people when we visited it on Nabami afternoon. I understand the location is far from the center of the city. The theme and pandal decoration deserve a decent amount of footfall.

Unfortunately, they have yet to announce any event details for Durga Puja in 2026. Their social media page has not been updated since 2024.
